Product Review: Patak's Coat & Cook! - Tikka

I bought this last October when we were in England. As it was due to expire in September, it seemed like a good idea to use it. Patak's make a good, reliable range of Indian cooking products. We can get some of the sauces in the US, but I had never seen this product here.

I coated two boneless chicken breasts with the paste and baked for 35 minutes at 350F. Ooh, now that I'm looking at this, it looks like a set of lungs that belonged to a chronic smoker!!!

In the end, I was only moderately happy with the results. No fault to Patak's, but I used the entire packet of paste on 2 pieces of chicken, when it probably was enough for 4. If I could change anything, I would coat the chicken, let the paste penetrate for 30 minutes to an hour, scrape the extra off, and cook as listed above. The taste was nice, so I would definitely try again. I served it with Indian spiced kale, and curried potato salad.

What might be nice (and this is what you do with the jars of pataks tikks paste) is mix the paste with natural yoghurt and marinate the chicken in that overnight and then bake it? You might have tried that already with the regular jars of paste you can get ;-)

Have have used yoghurt with the jars of paste before, and you are absolutely right, that is what it was missing. I didn't think about it until after I had cooked it, but it was really salty, so could have used the yoghurt to tone it down. There wasn't any mention of using yoghurt on the box (from what I can remember) so I thought that it was something different than the jar. It was a novelty, but not really that much different, and I think I've got two jars of the regualr paste here anyway. So will definitely use yoghurt next time. Yeh, remember that Indian restaurant in Stratford when we got take-away that one time after Valentine's day??? The roses...

I will necer forget the roses as long as i live - his face and yours will stay with me forever:-) I have seen the coat and cook in tesco they dont mention yoghurt at all they have other flavours too i think. There is a sauce you can buy call Bhund and you put the chicken in a dish raw and pour over the sauce then bake it in the oven the meat doesnt dry out and there is lots of sauce they are really good but you cant always find it. We are going for a curry on saturday to the Cotswold spice just outside shipston cant wait :-P

Yes, that was one of my finer moments... and completely sober too! I've never heard of Bhund. Is that the brand? It sounds good. I love pour over sauces. Not a fan of cutting raw chicken. Are you taking photos of Cotswold Spice, so at least I can pretend I've been there?

Have you tried Mr. Kook's Tikka Masala Sauce. It is so easy. Just add it, cook it and enjoy it.
